The tailwinds from yesterday were gone, and we definitely felt the difference! As we filled up our water bottles across the street from the Best Western in Lordsburg a gentleman walked up to us and asked where we were headed. When we told him Willcox he told us we were headed for some big up hills around Bowie and Willcox. While we appreciated him being informative, knowing that you are headed towards big hills somehow makes the entire ride a bit tougher. We crossed the border into Arizona after 20 miles, and gained an hour and took some pictures. We braced ourselves for the "dry heat" and vast desert, and headed down the road. We stopped to drink a lot, and took a long break at a gas station that sold freshly picked Pistachio and Walnuts. We have been passing pecan and pistachio orchards, and we have been dying to try some. We finally got our chance, and bought some to snack on later. The last 30 miles of the day were uphill, which was tough. On a positive note, what goes up must come down! We think we will have a nice down hill at some point in the next few days, bringing us from over 4000 feet in elevation to less than 1000 feet. Before we checked into the Holiday Inn Express in Willcox, we stopped at a tourist center to get some maps. The hotel was built fairly recently, and the rooms are nice and clean. We hope to continue watching "30 Rock" and get a good night sleep. Tomorrow we hope to hit Tucson and the Fifth Street Deli for dinner. Thinking about a corned beef sandwich with russian dressing and a Dr. Browns Black Cherry soda should make the ride a bit easier.
Thanks for coming along for the ride!
