Follow us as we cycle our way throughout the USA. While our ultimate objective is to see this beautiful country of ours, we hope that these trips will also be the perfect trip for father-son bonding, getting in shape, learning new things, experiencing America, and raising money for Folds of Honor. We are definitely psyched for these epic adventures, and thanks for coming along for the ride!

Day #18: Silsbee, TX- Shepherd, TX. 63 Miles

We left the motel in Silsbee around 7:30 again. We had to stop at a gas station  to get some breakfast and fill our water bottles because the 96 Motel didn't offer those services. We rocked out 40 miles before we stopped for a real meal (we had some snacks along the way). Early on, the roads were flat and straight but later on the ride became a series of hills.  We stopped at the Cookie Jar Cafe for some snacks (strangely, they didn't have any cookies). While we ate, it started to rain so we ran outside to bring our bikes onto the porch. We had another 20 miles until we reached Shepherd, so we waited inside until the lightening and rain past.   The temperature had cooled down significantly and the miles went by fairly quickly. Around a mile away from the motel, we stopped at a supermarket to pick up some food for dinner. We ate and relaxed in our room at the Americas Best Value Inn in Shepherd Texas.  We learned a lot first hand about Texas today - some of it we had read about in other blogs.  Texas is much more spread out than the other states we have been in so far.  If you need a payday loan or a church, you can find one every few miles.  If you need water, there are larger gaps ( by mileage) between places to fill up.  At one point after taking a water break we realized we were out of water.  Even though we had just drank, we immediately felt thirsty.  It was 95 degrees and obviously our minds were playing games with us, but it was not a great feeling.  Fortunately around the bend we found the Cookie Jar Cafe which was not on the GPS.  We brought (from home) some extra Platipus collapsible bottles which we have not used until now, but will be using starting tomorrow.  Texas is also known to have severe changes in elevation.  We experienced a bit of that late today, but according to our maps the worst is yet to come.

Thanks for coming along for the ride!!!
