Follow us as we cycle our way throughout the USA. While our ultimate objective is to see this beautiful country of ours, we hope that these trips will also be the perfect trip for father-son bonding, getting in shape, learning new things, experiencing America, and raising money for Folds of Honor. We are definitely psyched for these epic adventures, and thanks for coming along for the ride!

Day #21: Navasota, TX- Warrenton, TX. 56.5 Miles

This morning we left the hotel at 7:30am, a little tired but ready to show Texas who's boss! - We won today but are not so sure about the next few days. We rode 30 miles before we stopped to eat our bagels and muffins that we brought from the hotel (we hadn't passed a place to fill up our waters yet but we had filled up a few extra bottles). We continued another 10 miles or so until we hit Burton where we stopped for lunch at the Burton Cafe (a historical place...see pics below). They didn't have much for us to eat but we managed. We were especially happy to refill all of our water bottles because we had been running on empty for the last 5 miles before we reached the cafe. Our friend Claude who lived in Texas for a while many years ago advised us that when you see a gun rack on the back of a pick up truck - the guns are loaded.  We thought about that when we passed a random sign along the road which we took seriously (see picture below)  After lunch, we decided to head towards Round Top (the map said it had a B&B) for the night. On the way, we stopped for water in front of a big, ranch style house. After a few minutes of drinking, the front door swung opened and 10 dogs bolted at us. We were about to spray them with our pepper spray (we were tired and in no mood to get on our bike to out run them), but they stopped at the edge of the lawn and barked at us until we left. When we arrived at Round Top, we were lucky to find a small convenience store right before it closed (I guess stores can close at 3:00pm when the population is 90 people... it was 77 people last week but apparently there was a baby boom - see picture below). We got some food and called the two B&Bs in the area. They both didn't answer their phones (we are finding this to be a trend in Southern hotels/ motels) so we decided to go to a B&B in Warrenton (4.5 miles down the road). We made it up the last few hills leading up to Das Blaue Haus Inn and were extremely grateful to learn that our hosts had turned the AC on for us. We took showers and enjoyed ice cold Keystone Light and chips. Round Top and Warrenton are small towns known for their twice a year Antique Fairs - evidently attracting thousands of people to this quiet part of Texas.  The B&B we are staying at has a lot of old posters on the wall.  As we were relaxing in our room we noticed a poster that made us think of home in Stamford.  (see picture below - this b&b has 6 rooms and only one of these posters - what are the odds)  We are going to prepare the  food we bought and relax in the massage chair in the living room.

An update on our inner tube saga.  On Friday afternoon in Navasota we decided to go to a Walmart to get food.  When we got to the Walmart we realized it was a regular Walmart and not a Super Walmart with a supermarket.  We went in anyway and went to the bicycle area.  In every Walmart we had been to so far none of them had inner tubes that would fit our road bike tires.  Amazingly this small Walmart  had the 700 size inner tubes with presta valves but in the 35/43c size.  The ones we had brought with us were 28/32 size.  One call to John at Higher Ground Bike Shop confirmed that they should work.  We bought six and needed to use one right away as we got a flat on the way to the hotel - they worked!

Thanks for coming along for the ride!!
