Follow us as we cycle our way throughout the USA. While our ultimate objective is to see this beautiful country of ours, we hope that these trips will also be the perfect trip for father-son bonding, getting in shape, learning new things, experiencing America, and raising money for Folds of Honor. We are definitely psyched for these epic adventures, and thanks for coming along for the ride!

Day #17: DeRidder, LA- Silsbee, TX. 71.5 Miles

Yes, you read correctly... we, the Sloyer men, are in
T-E-X-A-S!!!

Texas, also known as the Big T or the Lone Star state, is famous for Her oil and the cowboys. However, cyclists are more concerned with Her width (widest state in the continental United States), and perhaps the state's track record with death penalty convictions (just kidding).

On a more serious note, we left the Stage Coach Inn at around 7:30am (a little bit of a late start). The roads were in great conditions with wide shoulders, and the weather stayed fairly cool until around 11:00am (when we were about 10 miles away from Kirbyville, TX). While we thought it was hot as hell, we learned from a sign on a church that we were mistaken (see picture)  We came across the LA/ TX border and took a picture at the Welcome to Texas sign (see picture). We stopped in Kirbyville for lunch and discussed biking an additional 30+ miles to Silsbee,TX in order to avoid staying in a motel where a man was shot recently  (read reviews for the Gateway Inn Motel in Kirbyville, TX). Just as we left Kirbyville, we saw lightning on the horizon. We raced down the street at 19 mph (pretty fast considering it wasn't a short sprint). After about 20 minutes we were forced to take shelter from the rain at a gas station ironically called Sunshine Convenience.  We got some cashews and soda and waited out the rain. After the rain passed, the temperature was significantly lower, and the sun was blocked by the clouds (great riding weather). 25 miles later, we arrived at the 96 Motel in Silsbee. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly (probably much better than the Gateway Inn), although there is no internet service.  Below there is a link to some video we took of July 4th festivities in DeRidder, LA yesterday.  It was a great small town USA experience.

Thanks for coming along for the ride!
