Follow us as we cycle our way throughout the USA. While our ultimate objective is to see this beautiful country of ours, we hope that these trips will also be the perfect trip for father-son bonding, getting in shape, learning new things, experiencing America, and raising money for Folds of Honor. We are definitely psyched for these epic adventures, and thanks for coming along for the ride!

Day #16: Oberlin, LA- DeRidder, LA. 34.1 Miles

Happy 4th of July!!

Please help us pay tribute to all the Men and Women who have dedicated their lives to ensuring that our freedom will never be compromised. As part of our bike ride, we are asking people to donate money to the Folds of Honor charity to aid those brave people who have put our national priorities before their own well being. You can learn more about the charity and donate on the right column of our blog.

We left the Oberlin Inn at 7:10. We decided to stop for breakfast at a convenience store. After filling our water bottles and eating ice cream sandwiches, we were on our way. The weather this morning was cool until around 11:00am when things really started to heat up. As things started getting hot, we started hitting hills. A lot of up and not a lot of down, but luckily the road flattened out again. We stopped about 2 miles away from DeRidder to drink some water under the shade of a tree on the side of the road. After about 5 minutes, a nasty looking dog lazily walked up to us and started sniffing and jumping on us a little. He wasn't being aggressive but we decided to start walking away with our bikes. The dog insisted on licking the mouth pieces on all of our water bottles, and followed us as we walked for about 1/2 a mile (not barking or anything...just walking behind us). He eventually stopped and we got back on our bikes to ride to the hotel. We didn't get far before my dad realized his back tire was completely flat. We walked to a nearby gas station to change the tire in the shade. Tire changing has gotten easier (3rd time's the charm). We are down to our last extra inner tube and will need to get some more overnighted to us.  We checked into the Stagecoach Inn Motel, and were astonished that they gave it the title "Motel". This place is far from a motel. The rooms are just as nice as a Comfort Inn, and the pool is immaculately clean. We are going to think of another in-between category (not motel but not hotel).   While others have been focused on the tour De France, we are going to spend this evening on a tour DeRidder (sorry, couldn't resist).  We are hoping to see fire works and an old fashion  pie eating contest.  Tomorrow we are hoping to make it to Texas.

Thanks for coming along for the ride, and thanks for donating to Folds of Honor!
