Today we biked- off more than we could chew!
We decided to sleep a little late today (7:00am). While we packed up from breakfast for the road, a nice woman named Earlene was watching humming birds feeding from a bird feeder hanging from a tree. When I ask the gentleman behind the desk at the Mountain View Lodge (a Lodge we would definitely recommend and wish we had more time there) if he had a map of Texas, Earlene insisted on getting us the maps from her car. It turns out she is retired from AAA and had great maps that were very helpful for us today and will be in the future. (Earlene is now following our blog). She graciously gave us 2 maps...one of the entire state of Texas and another one of Texas Hill Country. Another person we met today who was also a godsend was Donna Jonas. It was roughly midday. We had gone 30 tough miles and were out of water. We noticed on our map that there was a library coming up in Kendalia. We rode up and things were pretty quite. We noticed that the library was only open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We were distraught because we thought it was Tuesday (the days start to blend together) When we pulled on the door and it opened it felt like a miracle. Inside was Donna (see picture below) who has been the librarian there for 32 years. She pointed us to a pipe coming from a fresh water well and we drank like they did in the Bible. Donna mentioned that there was a convenience store (where you can also get your chainsaw serviced - see pics below) a mile down the road and we spent a few hours there as well. Later in the day we spent some time at a bar in Sisterville. The bar had great stuffed animals - not the kids kind. We left Sisterville exhausted and ready for the 13 mile ride to Comfort. Usually 13 miles might take an hour but this is hill country. Eight miles out of Comfort we were running on empty (on every level) and there was a detour sign at a fork in the road. We stopped our bikes and looked over the maps while baking in the sun. That is when we met the third person God sent to help us today. We did not catch his name, but he ascended from such a steep hill, it seemed like he had come out of nowhere. He looked like a cross between Lance Armstrong and Mr. Incredible on his racing bike and wearing full racing wardrobe - we had not seen another biker all day - what are the odds we would find one at exactly that moment. He could tell we needed help. He asked where we were going and we told him Comfort for tonight and hopefully to California. He said if he had his wallet he would come with us the rest of the way. He pointed us in the right direction and told us it was mostly down hill which gave us the will to keep going. Half an hour later we had checked in to The Executive Inn - not to be confused with any national chain or any place else you would want to spend a night, but we are thankful to have made it. There is a saying (see picture) - "Don't Mess With Texas". After a long day with no cloud cover and incredible ups and downs, we truly understand what that sign means.
Thanks for coming along for the ride!!!
